Chief Musician David West, percussion, joined the U.S. Coast Guard Band in October 2007. Prior to joining the Band, MUC West was a freelance musician performing with the Richmond Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Louisiana Philharmonic, Houston Grand Opera, and the New World Symphony in Miami. During the summer months, he performed with the Endless Mountain Music Festival, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Chautauqua Music Festival, and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. David holds performance degrees from Rice University (M.M.) where he studied with Richard Brown, and SUNY Fredonia (B.M.) where he received a Performer’s Certificate and graduated magna cum laude. While at Fredonia, he studied percussion with Kay Stonefelt and African drumming with Bernard Woma. He was winner of the SUNY Fredonia Concerto Competition in 2002, and toured as a marimba soloist with the Fredonia Wind Ensemble, performing Keiko Abe’s Prism Rhapsody. David is originally from Buffalo, NY.
