MUCS Richard Denton
MUCS Richard Denton

Senior Chief Musician Richard Denton, tuba, grew up in Connecticut and graduated from Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Music degree in music education in 1999, the same year he joined the U.S. Coast Guard Band. As a founding member of the Barefoot Brass Quintet during his college years, Denton was excited to join the Coast Guard Brass Quintet upon his enlistment, which has since represented the Band in venues from parking lots to Fenway Park, from Key West to Hawaii to Taiwan. The Quintet has appeared before the Band as soloists on numerous occasions, most recently to perform Bernstein’s "Suite from Mass". In addition to his duties as tuba player, MUCS Denton served in the Band’s office of finance and supply for over ten years and is currently the music librarian. Before joining the Band, he enjoyed being a part of the strolling bands of Hersheypark and the Disney/Grammy All-American College Orchestra at EPCOT. His teachers include Martha Taylor, Andrew Rodgers, and David Unland. In his free time, he can be found practicing in the basement near his wife, on the sidelines of his son's soccer field, enjoying performances by the Ledyard school music program, sharing his skills with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance service, walking in the woods, or teaching young low brass students.
