MU1 Kurt Cox
Musician First Class Kurt Cox, alto saxophone, is “a unique young artist that comes to the musical world with a unique and clear vision,” (Nadége Foofat, conductor). A musician whose stylistic range includes jazz, symphony orchestra, traditional wind band, chamber music, and contemporary music.
As a chamber musician, MU1 Cox has spent the last seven years devoted to developing and interacting with culturally and socially relevant art. As the baritone chair of Masso quartet and NUNC5!, he aided in the formation of commissioning projects such as Inter-acts and To Be Seen, Not Heard. These projects and ensembles have led to the commissioning and premiers of works by composers such as Stacy Garrop, Luis Fernando Amaya, Shi-An Costello, Wan Heo, Keaton Garrett, George Papajohn, Mya Vandegrift, Dave Dagta, Leo Discenza, and more. As a quartet member he has held recitals at venues and festivals including the Andrew Rafacz Gallery, Thirsty Ears, the Epiphany Center, Seven Hills Chamber Music Festival, Maggie Daley Park with the Chicago Puppet Theatre, Michigan State University, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Walla Walla Chamber Music Festival as an emerging artist with Masso quartet. Cox will continue to collaborate with composers and connect with the community as the alto chair in the U.S. Coast Guard Saxophone quartet.
His solo performance credits include the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, the Evermay Concert series in Washington D.C., the Shenandoah Conservatory Orchestra as winner of the Student Soloist Concerto Competition, the North American Saxophone Alliance as prize winner with Masso quartet, as well as appearances with the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra, the Northwestern University Symphony and Chamber Orchestras as a guest artist.
MU1 Cox graduated from Northwestern University with his Master of Music under the direction of Taimur Sullivan and completed his undergraduate studies at Shenandoah Conservatory under the direction of Dr. Timothy Roberts.
