MUC Ian Frenkel
An expatriate of the former Soviet Union, Chief Musician Ian Frenkel is the pianist and arranger for the U.S. Coast Guard Band. He is active as an arranger, composer and pianist in the New England area and has often been commissioned by the New York-based new music group The Absolute Ensemble
. As an arranger, MUC Frenkel had several settings of Leonard Bernstein songs performed by renowned soprano Ljuba Kazarnovskaja of the Metropolitan Opera at the 1995 Morris International Music Festival in Morristown, New Jersey. His portfolio includes numerous arrangements and orchestrations for such highly acclaimed artists as Placido Domingo, Martha Reeves and Lorrie Morgan. Locally, he serves as musical director for both the Bozrah Center Congregational Church and St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Groton. As a performer, Frenkel specializes in early jazz styles, frequently performing with nationally known Dixieland and swing ensembles and artists. MUC Frenkel has also performed jazz organ on the Japanese release "T.V. Jazz USA" and with saxophonist Bobby Watson. Fellow USCG Band member and Dixieland clarinetist MUC Andrew Sherwood, featured MUC Frenkel on his latest release, "While We Danced At The Mardi Gras." MUC Frenkel holds a bachelor of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
