The Senior Education and Fellowship Program (SEFP) is a diverse portfolio of the most competitive and prestigious think tanks, senior war colleges, and centers of industry excellence in the nation. Each year, 28-30 Captains and Commanders are selected via a rigorous board and panel process as Coast Guard ambassadors and champion the Commandant’s strategic vision for the service.
In addition, SEFP manages the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Seminar XXI Fellowship. The Coast Guard sends four senior officers ranked O-5 to O-8, active or reserve) civilians at the GS-14/15 level to actively engage with 75 other government and executive leaders representing the federal government, non-governmental agencies, and the private sector.
Selected candidates regularly participate in symposiums or working groups that influence decision-makers at the highest levels of government and or inform international partners about the capabilities of the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. In addition, many Fellows write scholarly think-pieces for academic journals and nationally-recognized media.
New programs (fellowships and senior service schools) are considered on a biennial basis (even years). Program coordinators may contact the SEFP Program Manager at sefp@uscg.mil for specific criteria and the application process.
