Rear Admiral Shane C. Steiner

RDML Shane Steiner serves as the Assistant Commandant (Acting) for Workforce and Family Services (WFS), assigned to Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C.  RDML Steiner directs five HQ Offices and one Service Center responsible for developing policy for, securing funding for, and overseeing the delivery of Workforce and Family Services for the CG’s over 180,000 military and civilian personnel, Auxiliarists, and dependents.  He manages a budget of over $46M, 389 personnel, and over 4000 volunteers.  His Directorate ensures the delivery of services related to Wellness (such as Employee Assistance, Substance Misuse Prevention, Health Promotions, Special Needs, Suicide Prevention, and Family Advocacy), Family Support (such as Relocation Assistance, Spouse Support, Childcare Assistance, and Personal Financial Management), Sexual Assault Prevention, Response, and Recovery, Integrated Primary Prevention, and Workplace Harassment Prevention and Adjudication.   

RDML Steiner began his military career in the U.S. Air Force, graduating as a Second Lieutenant from Detachment 750, Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, in 1999.  He then attended The Pennsylvania State University’s College of Medicine through the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program, graduating and entering Active Duty in 2003.  He served in the Air Force for over 12 years as a Flight Surgeon and a Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Physician, completing four assignments and three deployments, including a five-month tour of duty at Kandahar Air Base, Afghanistan.  He completed his residency in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2011.  In 2015 he completed an inter-service transfer to the U.S. Public Health Service and was detailed to the CG, where he completed a four-year tour as Chief of Preventive Medicine and Population Health at CG Headquarters.  From March 2019 through April 2024, he fleeted up and served as the Chief, Division of Operational Medicine and Quality Improvement, Physician Force Manager, Chief of the Professional Review Committee, and Assistant Chief Medical Officer.  On 1 May 2024 he was promoted to Rear Admiral (Lower Half) and served for over a year as Executive Director, Health Services, before beginning his current assignment on 1 July 2025.

RDML Steiner’s military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Air Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the USPHS Presidential Unit Citation, the Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation with one silver star and three gold stars, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one bronze star, the Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal, and the Air Force Expeditionary Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster and gold border, among others.  He has 361 total flying hours, including 88.5 combat hours.  He is one of only a handful of Flight Surgeons to have ever flown on the B-2A Spirit Stealth Bomber, with Spirit Number 447.
