Rear Admiral Eric C. Jones assumed duties as Deputy for Personnel Readiness to the Deputy Commandant for Mission Support (CG-DCMS-DPR) at Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, DC, in April of 2022, where he oversees the recruiting, development and support of the highly capable and diverse workforce that enables Coast Guard mission success. In this capacity, he is responsible for synchronizing the contributions of human resources and force readiness training staffs, as well as the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, in providing a mission-ready workforce of over 57,000 active duty, reserve, and civilian personnel. He also chairs the Academy’s Board of Trustees and is the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Headquarters.
Serving at flag rank since 2017, he most recently served as the Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Human Resources (CG-1). Other flag assignments include Commander of the Coast Guard Seventh District in Miami, Florida, and as Military Advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security. Rear Admiral Jones is honored to have been appointed as an Honorary Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer.
A native of Half Moon Bay, California, Rear Admiral Jones is a 1987 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Engineering from the Coast Guard Academy, a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and Fluid Dynamics from Brown University, and a Master of Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan Fellows Program in Innovation and Global Leadership. He is also a graduate of the Naval War College Command and Staff Nonresident Seminar Program and a 2001-2002 Fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI on Foreign Politics, International Relations, and the National Interest.
His afloat assignments include: First Lieutenant aboard USCGC VENTUROUS (WMEC 625); Commanding Officer and Plankowner of USCGC TYBEE (WPB 1330); Navigator and Executive Officer of the Coast Guard’s three-masted sail training barque USCGC EAGLE (WIX 327); Executive Officer of USCGC FORWARD (WMEC 911); Commanding Officer of USCGC HARRIET LANE (WMEC 903); and Commanding Officer of USCGC EAGLE from 2009 until 2012. Rear Admiral Jones holds an unlimited tonnage Master Mariner license for oceangoing vessels, sail and power.
Rear Admiral Jones’ assignments ashore include: Mathematics and Leadership Instructor at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy; Workforce and Operations Reviewer, Division of Program Review, Coast Guard Headquarters; Deputy Chief, Office of Budget and Programs; and Deputy Chief, Office of Congressional and Government Affairs, Coast Guard Headquarters. Rear Admiral Jones served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy from 2012 to 2014. From 2014 to2017, he served as Executive Assistant to the Deputy Commandant for Operations at Coast Guard Headquarters.
His personal awards include the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medals, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon.
