The Revenue Cutter Vigilant: Part IV of VI

When war was declared in June of 1812, the newly-born United States had only recently begun forging its armada of naval vessels and the newly-formed Revenue Cutter Service; still in its youth at 22 years.

One of the newest Revenue Cutters, and the third to carry the name Vigilant, was built, equipped and furnished by shipbuilder Benjamin Marble, of Newport, Rhode Island. On August 21, 1812, the Newport customs collector paid Marble $8,500.00 for completing the new cutter. Vigilant was quick, lightly manned and highly maneuverable. At sixty feet long, Vigilant was manned by only 17 crewmembers.
