Morgenthau Crest

shipscrestThe shape of the shield is adapted from the Department of the Treasury Seal. White, red and blue are the colors associated with the U.S. Coast Guard. The scales highlight Henry Morgenthau, Jr., namesake of the cutter, being the Secretary of the Treasury from 1934 to 1945 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The compass rose symbolizes navigation, leadership, and search and rescue. The electronic flash underscores quick response and the advanced communications and combat systems of the MORGENTHAU.

As head of the Treasury, Henry Morgenthau supervised the financing of both Roosevelt’s New Deal and the United States’ participation in World War II. The rising sun, signifying a new beginning, represents the New Deal. The “V” is for victory, a sign or signal used by the Allies in World War II. The swords represent maritime law enforcement, drug interdiction, and the guarding of our coastal waterways. The laurel wreath honors the cutter’s past and present accomplishments, both domestic and overseas.

Griffins combine the courage of a lion with the alertness of an eagle and commemorate USCGC MORGENTHAU’s participation in Operation Vigilant Sentinel and Operation Noble Eagle. The wings of the griffins also allude to the heliport capacity of a High Endurance Cutter. The blue water represents the Pacific Theater area of operations. Gold is emblematic of excellence and high ideals.

The Motto, “Decus Pacifici - Pride of the Pacific,” is a testament to MORGENTHAU’s laurelled service to her country and the Coast Guard for more than three decades.
