Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Jose D. Martis reported to duty as Executive Officer of USCGC VIGILANT (WMEC-617) in June 2012. His most recent assignment was at Coast Guard HQ, Deputy Commandant for Operations, Office of Budget Execution (DCO-83) where he managed the execution of $150 million in support of Coast Guard-wide priorities.
Mexican by birth and U.S. Citizen by Naturalization, LCDR Martis is the epitome of living the American dream. LCDR Martis enlisted in the USCG in 1992, and was selected for the highly competitive, Pre-Commissioning Program for Enlisted Personnel (PPEP) in 1996. Through the PPEP program, he graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, Summa Cum Laude, in 1998.
LCDR Martis received his commission through Officer Candidate School in 1998. Ten years later he graduated from the Texas A&M University with a Masters of Business Administration (MBA).
His past afloat tours include Commanding Officer USCGC OCRACOKE (WPB-1307) and USCGC SAPELO (WPB 1314), both home ported in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He also served as Operations Officer onboard USCGC BEAR (WMEC-901), home ported in Portsmouth, VA.
Lieutenant Commander Martis’ personal awards include Four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon Bar in addition to various meritorious unit awards.
