MSU Chicago
Marine Safety Unit Chicago is responsible for federal safety and security oversight of a dynamic maritime transportation system along the Lake Michigan waterfront and Illinois Waterway. The area of responsibility includes 101 regulated facilities and 233 vessels including tank barges, passenger vessels, towboats, and freight ships. Foreign vessels call upon the international ports of Illinois and Indiana to trade a variety of cargoes including steel products, petcoke, coal, taconite, grain, and chemicals. The Chicago River runs through downtown Chicago, the nation’s third largest city which hosts a number of marine events throughout the year; these events draw millions of people to the Lake Michigan and downtown waterfront. Chicago tourism, the northwest Indiana steel industry, and the northern Illinois oil and chemical industry keep the unit busy with inspections, investigations, exams, boardings, harbor patrols, pollution response, waterways management, and outreach activities.
