Coast Guard Station Marathon is at the heart of the keys mile marker 48 on Vaca Key (Marathon). Miami is 106 miles to the northeast and Key West is 48 miles to the southwest. Situated in the Seventh Coast Guard District, the Station falls under the direction of Sector Key West.
Marathon got it name when the Rail Road built their head quarters for pay and personnel. The railroad workers name Vaca Key "Marathon" while exercising at their little city. Marathon is 7 miles long and 2.5 miles wide. The average air and water temperature is above 70 degrees with a few weeks of colder temperatures. Marathon is mostly made up of resorts for people to fish and dive. The city of marathon does have 5 major appliance home and grocery stores, along with video, fast food and novelty shops. The clear water and pleasant air temperatures keep Station Marathon's crew busy. The Station on average responds to 300 Search and Rescue cases and conducts 500 Law Enforcement Boardings a year.
