Rear Admiral Joseph E. Vorbach


RADM Joseph VorbachRear Admiral Joseph E. Vorbach served as the Thirteenth District Commander from 1990 to 1993. His previous assignments include: Chief Counsel for the USCG in Washington DC in 1986 and Commandant of Cadets at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct.

Prior to that, Vorbach served as Chief, International Affairs Staff at Coast Guard headquarters from 1981 to 1983. Other tours include Special Assistant for Law of the Sea for the Deputy Secretary of the DOT and Special Assistant for Law of the Sea to the Chief Counsel of the USCG from 1977 to 1980. Vorbach also served in the Office of the Chief Counsel as Assistant Chief, Legislation and Regulations branch from 1968 to 1969. 

He was assistant professor of law at the Coast Guard Academy from 1969 to 1973 and also served as the Legal Officer in the Eleventh CG District in Long Beach, Calif.  

is sea tours included service on the Cutter Absecon in Norfolk, Va., and the Westwind in New York. He commanded the 95-foot patrol boat Cape Fairweather in New London, Ct., and also commanded Loran Station Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific. Rear Admiral Vorbach received a Bachelor of Science degree from the CG Academy in 1959 and a Juris Doctor degree with honors from George Washington University in 1968. He is a 1981 graduate of the National War College. Vorbach's military awards include three Meritorious Service Medals, the Coast Guard commendation medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Arctic Service Ribbon.
