Office365 FAQs - Where is the Microsoft cloud hosted?

Microsoft has 6 data centers across the United States (mandatory CONUS requirement) configured for the .MIL cloud where user accounts will be stored. Through the use of the cloud, each account will automatically be stored in the facility that optimizes the connectivity; in other words, accounts will shift between data centers based on the location of a user’s login history. Backup copies will exist at diverse locations.

In a nutshell, cloud computing is all about storing and retrieving your personal (or corporate) data from your own little area on the Internet. Nothing is stored on your local hard drive and it is accessible from any location, any device and at any time.
