Office365 Terms & Definitions - Clients

End users within the DoD use various types of clients to perform daily operations, exchange information, and collaborate about mission related activities. Within this document the Government has defined the following client types:

  • Virtual Desktop applications operate on a computer operating system that does not run directly on the endpoint hardware from which a user accesses.
  • Web Browser based applications provide the ability to retrieve, present and traverse information resources that may be a web page, image, video or other content that relies on connectivity to a remote system/service.
  • Thick Client is a full-featured application. Unlike thin clients (e.g., Web Browser) thick clients are locally installed applications that are functional whether they are connected to a network or not.
  • Mobile refers to applications that run on Blackberry, Apple IOS, and Android devices, approved for use on the DoD network and which contain and support DoD-approved mobile applications for use.
