The Personnel Readiness Task Force recently received feedback that there is still confusion in the field about facial hair and eligibility for Command Senior Enlisted Leader assignments. To be clear, all members (with or without authorized beards) are eligible to compete, provided they meet the standards in the Uniform Regulations (COMDTINST M1020.6, Chapter 2.B). In his State of the Coast Guard Address, the Commandant reinforced the Coast Guard’s commitment to removing barriers to inclusion. In this case, a policy barrier does not exist, but even a perceived policy barrier may discourage talented people from applying for these key assignments. Admiral Schultz asks that you make sure the workforce is aware of the current policy and that you continue to encourage our enlisted leaders from diverse backgrounds to seek these challenging and rewarding opportunities.
