Wellness Wednesday Invite for 20 August

Hello Shipmates,

During this time of social distancing and isolation through telework, it is easy to lose our sense of connectedness. Resiliency, our ability to handle emotional uncertainty and physical demands, is epitomized through this ever-changing pandemic response. Successfully navigating these challenges is closely related to one’s sense of belonging and a deeper understanding of our interdependence.  A seasoned panel from Training Center Yorktown will be discussing the systems they have used to intentionally foster connectedness.

Emotional Connectedness (Horizontal)  – Intentionally connecting with our shipmates and friends at a time when we are forced to work apart. Command Master Chief Andrea Martyowski will discuss the importance of reaching out to co-workers and shipmates – not in just a professional context, but to provide personal connections and esprit de corps.

Spiritual Connectedness (Vertical) – Having a sense of belonging to something bigger than ourselves, aids in our ability to not only recover from events, but provide a sense of purpose as we traverse difficult times. Chaplain Dave Peterson will cover the importance of strong vertical ties in our lives, not only expressed through our faith, but our sense of connectedness to the Coast Guard and our mission.

Self-Connectedness (Mindfulness) – Taking the time to intentionally clear our minds, and mediate or focus on re-energizing our mind/body connection. BMC Lee McMillian will walk us through a practical exercise to help clear our minds, control our breathing, and focus on ourselves.
