Livestream: "Beethoven's 7th"
February 28, 2021
On Sunday, February 28 at 2 p.m. EST, Simulcast on our YouTube channel, the
United States Coast Guard Band performs Beethoven’s “7th Symphony.” Under the baton of
Assistant Director, Chief Warrant Officer Jeffrey Spenner, this arrangement for a nonet of winds
conveys the same vivacious spirit found in the full scale work. Through the Virtual Concert Hall, the
Coast Guard Band remains committed to representing the men and women of our service and
highlighting the talents of our excellent musicians.
Beethoven’s 7th Symphony is a favorite with orchestral audiences and performers. Throughout its
four movements, the symphony contrasts sounds of intense joy and excitement with brooding and
despair. The arrangement heard today was made around 1812, the same time as the orchestral
version, with no clear attribution. Composed for a pair of oboes, clarinets, horns, bassoons, and one
contrabassoon, the expert individual and group efforts result in a musical tour de force. We look
forward to seeing you at the Virtual Concert Hall for this energetic performance!
