Academy Concert - "A New Morning for the World"
The United States Coast Guard Band presents “A New Morning for the World,” a free performance
highlighting the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the history of diversity in the Coast Guard.
The music of Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, and others is augmented by guest speakers including
Rear Admiral William Kelly and former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Vince Patton.
For this special occasion, the Band is proud to include members of the Corps of Cadets and the
Coast Guard Academy Glee Club.
The program opens with “Come Sunday,” a moving spiritual by Omar Thomas, and Scott Joplin’s
“Combination March.” Saxophonist Chief Musician Cedric Mayfield joins the Band for variations on
“Amazing Grace,” and soprano soloist Musician 1st Class Megan Weikleenget and others perform “It
Don’t Mean a Thing” by the legendary Duke Ellington. The performance’s focal point is Joseph
Schwantner’s “New Morning for the World” narrated by Master Chief Patton. The powerful text is
drawn from speeches and letters from the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Finally, the Band is joined
by The Coast Guard Academy Glee Club for a stirring rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
