John Downes

John Downes is General Foreman of the Yard Services Group that consists of the Central Tool Room, Heavy Equipment Repair Shop, Paint Shop, and Materials Handling Shop. He began his employment at the Yard as a Rigger Worker in 1983. Promoted two years later to Rigger Foreman, Mr. Downes oversaw all rigging activities on the waterfront and in the Rigging Shop for the next eighteen years. He was promoted to Assistant General Foreman of the Services Group in 2003 and Services Group General Foreman in January, 2012.

Prior to his federal career at the Yard, John Downes worked at Bethlehem Steel Corporation Key Highway Shipyard from 1971 to 1982, first as a Rigging Apprentice, then as a Journeyman (1st Class) Rigger and rigger supervisor.

Mr. Downes is a United States Army veteran, serving from 1968 to 1971.
