The new Coast Guard Headquarters building at St. Elizabeths will provide 1.2 million square feet of office space on 10 floors for 3,700 employees. The building is designed to maximize collaboration. It features state-of-the-art conference and team rooms, standard workspaces and furniture, and ample natural light. The Child Development Center can accommodate 120 children, which doubles the current Coast Guard Headquarters capacity. The Child Development Center will also have direct access to a new playground. The headquarters building will also feature a 12,500-square-foot medical clinic, a 50-seat snack shop with deli service, and a 400-seat auditorium.
Six interior building courtyards will provide outdoor space for collaboration and enjoyment. Courtyard elements will include outdoor seating, water and landscaping. In addition, a large rainwater retention pond outside the building will be surrounded by walkways and plantings.
Sustainability is a key element of the headquarters building. More than 400,000 square feet of grass and groundcover will be planted on the rooftops of the building and parking garage, making this one of the largest green roofs in the country. The building is designed to meet Silver-level certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, known as LEED. This certifies that a building was designed and built with attributes like sustainable development, water savings and energy efficiency in mind.
