If you are visiting our web site because you have just received orders to Sector San Juan…Congratulations!  I’m certain you will find your new assignment to be rewarding and filled with challenges, adventures, and opportunities unlike anywhere else in the Coast Guard.  I’ve found adjusting to island life to be a simple transition.  For those headed to the amazing U.S. Virgin Islands, I’m certain you will quickly master driving on the wrong side of the road.  If you are headed to Puerto Rico, you will soon experience a rich, spirited culture that warmly embraces all that live on or visit this Island of Enchantment, even those, like myself that speak no Spanish.

Puerto Rico is around 1,000 miles southeast of Miami (About 3hrs by Plane).  The island is about 100 miles x 35 miles and is roughly the size of Connecticut.  The climate is tropical and humid with daily highs in the 80's and nightly lows in the 70's. 

 

Puerto Rico has approximately 4 million residents with around 2.5 million   living in the San Juan metro area.  The currency is the U.S. dollar  and Puerto Rico is on the Atlantic Time Zone.  The telephone code for Puerto Rico is (787) and you would dial this code just like calling state to state.  The U.S. postage service rates are the same as those in the mainland U.S.  All the major express delivery providers like FEDEX and UPS also delivery to Puerto Rico.  Spanish and English are the official languages of Puerto Rico.
