Puerto Rico's population is predominantly Roman Catholic. Catholic and Protestant services in English are available at Fort Buchanan. The following is a partial list of the English speaking churches/services and military Chaplains history.
The Chaplain Office provides information in regard to worship services held in English in the greater San Juan area. These worship services are listed below. While there is a chapel at Air Station Borinquen, there is no chapel on Base San Juan. At St. Thomas and St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, practically all of the local religious services are held in English.
The Chaplain coordinates community outreach activities, enabling members of the Coast Guard to express their convictions in service to their fellow men and women. Current outreach activities include teaching and/or tutoring at a local school and helping with lunches at two separate soup kitchens.
On occasion, the Chaplain gets underway with the crew of the cutters or visits members of the Coast Guard serving at St. Thomas and St. Croix. On a regular basis the Chaplain provides by e-mail "reflections" for thoughtful consideration on assorted topics.
The principal activity of the Chaplain is to provide members of the Coast Guard with confidential counseling or mentoring. Topics and issues include ethics/morality, religion/spirituality, alcohol/substance abuse, marriage, pre-marriage, career choices, depression, grief, and stress. No matter what a person believes and no matter whether a person has any beliefs at all, every member of the Coast Guard has access to the Chaplain to discuss, in strict confidence, matters of a personal nature.
