Our mission is to provide the best customer service and support to all Sector San Juan and Visitors Units.
The Gunner’s Mate (GM) rating is the Coast Guard’s small arms weapons specialists. GM is one of the oldest ratings in the Coast Guard established in 1797. At Sector San Juan we work with everything from pistol, rifles, shotgun, and machine guns to 25mm Mk 38 weapons. We are responsible for training personnel in proper handling of weapons, ammunition, and pyrotechnics. We perform maintenance on all ordnance/gunnery equipment.
Here at Sector San Juan our daily schedule consists of issuing ammo to the cutters, reporting use of ammunition and pyrotechnics, maintaining the classification of the ammunition and pyrotechnics, taking all the San Juan area operational units to the range and training them in use of pistol, rifle, and shotgun, and assisting cutter GM’s to maintain weapons. We also do preventative maintenance on our weapons and are in charge of training Sector San Juan personnel in the Use of Force policy and maintaining the force protection team. The Gunner’s Mates on the Cutters do preventative maintenance on their weapons on their boats. They are also in charge of the maintaining weapons qualifications of the personnel on board the cutters and training them on the weapons systems. The Gunner’s Mates at Air Station Borinquen are in charge of Base Security.
The Sector San Juan Gunner’s Mates consist of two GM’s at the Sector San Juan Armory (1 E-6 and 1 E-5), one GM for each of the five homeported Cutters (E-4 to E-6), and two GM’s at Air Station Borinquen (1 E-7 and 1 E-4).
