Post
9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
This is a no cost program for members of
the Armed Forces who have served at least 90 days of qualifying active duty on
or after 11 Sep 2001. Regular and Reserve members are automatically eligible
upon meeting the active duty requirements. Qualifying time can be compiled from
multiple sets of qualifying orders (90 aggregate days) to meet the required
service. This program takes effect 1
August. This program may offer
tuition/fees, housing allowance, and a book/supplies stipend for you or your
family members.
If you are eligible for one or more VA
education programs (MGIB-SR, REAP, or MGIB-AD,) VA will require you to
relinquish one program for Post 9/11 benefits.
However, having eligibility for other programs is not a requirement for
Post 9/11 GI Bill. Due to the
complexities of this program, before you relinquish any benefit, it is
recommended to speak with a VA Education Counselor at 888-GIBILL-1 (442-4551).
The Post 9/11 GI Bill is transferable to
your dependents if you meet the requirements outlined in ALCOAST 377/09. In
order to transfer benefits, member must be in a SELRES status or on active duty
when you request transfer of benefits.
You must have at least 6 years in the armed forces and most members must
obligate an additional four years in the armed forces – this can be SELRES or
active duty. For members who have over 20 years or those that cannot obligate
due to service policy or statute, refer to ALCOAST 377/09
