Security Levels
Command Philosophy
This missive is intended to alleviate any uncertainty concerning my expectations. I offer a list of my key points which focus on my minimum standards and command objects. I do not suggest that this is all-inclusive but rather a core to be built upon.
WATCHSTANDING- Keep a diligent, alert watch. Situational awareness, always know where all contacts and hazards are located, condition of equipment and status of machinery, ship's position, orders, and responsibilities of your watch, etc. Scan your entire surroundings (e.g., gauges, ocean, and RADAR) every 5 to 15 minutes at a minimum.
PUNCTUALITY - Never be late with an assignment, report, or watch. If you can not meet a deadline or watch notify your supervisor or me early enough to change the time or make allowances. I am willing to work with your schedule if you give me ample notice. Do not come to me five minutes prior to inform me you will be late with your assignment. I would rather be two hours early than two minutes late.
AGGRESSIVENESS - Albeit Search and Rescue or Law Enforcement, I want every crewmember to aggressively execute our mission. SAR is and always will be our number one mission. Law Enforcement is a strong second and I want everyone to aggressively pursue any opportunity to enforce federal laws and regulations, as well as international laws, without sacrificing mission number one.
FUN - When overwhelmed with our daunting responsibilities, step back (without sacrificing safety and the above) and find the humor and satisfaction of life in STEADFAST. We need not drill each other to the deck, but rather we can fulfill our mission successfully without belligerence toward our shipmates--appreciate our diverse backgrounds and cultures.
ALCOHOL - Take care of your shipmate. I charge each and every one of you to protect your shipmate; when you see a shipmate going down the path to bring discredit upon the Coast Guard or drinking too much alcohol get him him/her back safely to the ship. Drink responsibly and protect your shipmate.
