USCGC SHERMAN Command Philosophy

MISSION

Protect the interests of the United States as directed by our Operational Commander.

VISION

Be recognized as the best cutter in the fleet.  Provide service that exceeds expectations.
Uphold our Service’s core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

My priorities for command:

Operational Excellence - We are seagoing professionals doing an important job.  Strive to flawlessly execute our mission and be committed to continuously learn, train, and practice.  Try to focus on today, reap lessons offered by the past, and prepare for the challenges ahead.  Strike a proper balance between effectiveness and efficiency.  Emphasize caring stewardship of our cutter -- top-notch maintenance, spotless cleanliness, and squared-away programs.

Safety - Place a premium on safety always.  Avoid unnecessary risks, while ensuring that risks taken provide a greater benefit.  Apply the Coast Guard’s Operational Risk Management (ORM) practices to all evolutions.  Every crewmember must safeguard their shipmates and our cutter.

Shipmates - Our people are the lifeblood of this unit.  We all contribute and are interdependent, so we must care for one another.  Encourage innovation and open communication by empowering those around you.  Stand devoted watches, mentor and teach, give direct and timely performance feedback, and learn about your shipmates’ personal lives, goals, and concerns.

Seize the Day - We will savor the bounties of the sea, honor our Service’s traditions and heritage, and strengthen the bonds of friendship.  We will seek out interesting ports of call, enjoy breaks from the routine, and make the most of our journeys.  While your duty to serve will often come first, we will strive to optimize time with family or pursuing other interests.
