Commander William L. Mees Jr.
CDR Mees enlisted in the Coast Guard from Richmond, Virginia in 1993. His enlisted assignments include Coast Guard Cutters STEADFAST, VIGOROUS, POINT BROWER, and FARALLON and he advanced to the rate of Quarter Master 1st Class. After graduating from Officer Candidate School in 2000, he has served in USCGC RESOLUTE as 1st LT, USCGC SITKINAK as Executive Officer and USCGC EDISTO as Commanding Officer. He reported aboard in July of 2015 to the USCGC MIDGETT as Executive Officer.
Ashore, CDR Mees completed tours as a Command Duty Officer planning and directing search and rescue and law enforcement cases at Coast Guard District 7 in Miami, Florida and as a Program Analyst for the Deputy Commandant for Operations Resource Management Directorate at CG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Most recently he was assigned to the CG Office of Maritime Law Enforcement as Maritime Advisor to the US Ambassador, CG Liaison and Drug Interdiction Specialist at the US Embassy, Republic of Panama.
CDR Mees has over 18 years experience conducting Maritime Law Enforcement, Maritime Search and Rescue and Operations Afloat. While not operating, he is a program performance, planning and budgeting professional. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Excelsior College, a Master of Public Administration from the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at the George Washington University and is a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration. His military decorations include the Department of Homeland Security Secretary’s Exceptional Service award (Gold Medal), a Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, four Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
CDR Mees is married to Noemi and is the proud father of Humberto, a BM2 assigned to CG Station Fort Lauderdale, FL; Billy, a junior in Business Administration at Florida Atlantic University; and Benjamin, a student at Newport High School in Bellevue, WA and member of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps.
