Commander Benjamin D. Berg
CDR Berg, a native of Pensacola, Florida, graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. He reported as Executive Officer aboard USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC 726) in June 2013.
His first assignment upon commissioning was as Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC RESOLUTE (WMEC 620) in St. Petersburg, Florida. In 1997, CDR Berg assumed duties as Executive Officer aboard USCGC KODIAK ISLAND (WPB 1341) in Panama City, Florida where he conducted Search and Rescue, Drug Interdiction and Migrant Interdiction operations in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.
In 1999, CDR Berg entered the Coast Guard Financial Management Program at the College of William & Mary, Mason School of Business. Upon graduation in 1999 with a Master of Business Administration degree, CDR Berg reported to Maintenance & Logistics Command, Atlantic, in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as Chief of the Budget Section and Contingency Comptroller. In 2003, CDR Berg assumed duties as Executive Officer, Coast Guard Patrol Forces Mediterranean (PATFORMED) in Sicily and Crete at the outset of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. PATFORMED deployed four 110' patrol boats to the Mediterranean to conduct maritime security operations with Naval Forces Europe.
CDR Berg assumed command of USCGC ROANOKE ISLAND (WPB 1346) in Homer, Alaska in 2004 where he led the crew in conducting Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement and Homeland Security operations throughout the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound. In 2006, CDR Berg reported to duties as Comptroller and Supply Department Head at Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida, where his staff executed an annual budget of $25 million supporting the Coast Guard’s largest and busiest Air Station. While in this position, CDR Berg also completed a Master of Arts in Security Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School, Center of Homeland Defense & Security in Monterey, California.
In June 2010, CDR Berg assumed duties as Deputy Commander, Coast Guard Patrol Forces Southwest Asia in Manama, Bahrain. He led more than 300 personnel throughout the Arabian Gulf, Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan conducting maritime security, critical infrastructure protection and theater security cooperation operations. In 2011, he assumed responsibilities as USCG Security Assistance Officer and Coast Guard Liaison Officer at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in Tampa, FL, providing advice and assistance on maritime security to the Combatant Commander, US embassies and partner nation maritime forces throughout the Middle East.
A 2004 graduate of the Naval War College, School of Naval Command & Staff, CDR Berg’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, two Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medals, Expert Rifle Medal and Expert Pistol Medal. He is married to Mrs. Lisa Carr of St. Louis, Missouri. They have three children, Alexander, Natalie and Nathaniel.
