Captain Laura M. Dickey
Captain Laura Dickey is a 1990 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Government. She reported to USCGC MIDGETT in July 2012 from Newport, RI, having completed the senior course of study at the U.S. Naval War College.
Upon commissioning, she served as a Deck Watch Officer and Operations Officer aboard USCGC MADRONA (WLB 302) in Charleston, SC. She was then assigned as Executive Officer of USCGC KEY LARGO (WPB 1324) in Savannah, GA. She then served three years as a Search and Rescue Controller at the Atlantic Area/Fifth District Command Center. In 1997, she returned to sea as Commanding Officer of USCGC CHINCOTEAGUE (WPB 1320) in Mobile, AL. She was then assigned to duty under instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, receiving a Juris Doctor in 2002. After passing the bar and graduating with honors from Naval Justice School, she was assigned to the Legal Division at Maintenance & Logistics Command Atlantic, Norfolk, VA. While stationed at MLCA, she was a staff attorney in the Command Advice and Operations Law Branch, providing legal support to Atlantic Area units. She also completed a one-year rotation as a courts-martial prosecutor at the Navy Trial Service Office East in Norfolk, VA. From 2004 to 2005, she served as Executive Officer of USCG Patrol Forces Southwest Asia in the Kingdom of Bahrain in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
Following assignment overseas, she returned afloat and to Charleston to serve as Executive Officer of USCGC DALLAS (WHEC 716). She then commanded USCGC DEPENDABLE (WMEC 626), homeported in Cape May, NJ, from 2007 to 2009, conducting operations from New England to the Caribbean. From 2009 to 2011, she was assigned to the Office of Congressional Affairs in Washington, D.C., where she served as the Coast Guard’s Liaison to the United States Senate. She completed a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in June 2012.
Captain Dickey has been awarded three Meritorious Service Medals (with Operational Distinguishing Device), three Coast Guard Commendation Medals (with Operational Distinguishing Device), two Coast Guard Achievement Medals (with Operational Distinguishing Device), and several unit awards. She is authorized to wear a permanent Cutterman’s device. She is a member of the Bar of the State of North Carolina and is a designated Coast Guard Judge Advocate.
Captain Dickey is a native of Wilmington, North Carolina.
