After graduating from the Coast Guard Academy in
1994, CDR Klopson was assigned to USCGC SHERMAN (WHEC 720), a High Endurance
Cutter in Alameda, CA as Gunnery Officer and Assistant
Navigator. In 1996, he was assigned as Executive Officer on USCGC EDISTO
(WPB 1313), a patrol boat in Crescent City, CA. Midway through that tour he
coordinated the homeport shift of the cutter and all personnel to San Diego,
CA. In 1998, he was selected to be Admiral’s Aide for the Commander,
Maintenance and Logistics Command Pacific. From 1999 through 2001, CDR
Klopson served as a Law Enforcement Duty Officer (LEDO) and Patrol Boat
Manager at the Eleventh Coast Guard District in
Alameda,
CA. During that tour, he served as
LEDO during the interdiction of 3 of the largest 10 drug busts in history.
In 2001, CDR Klopson served as Commanding Officer of the 110 foot patrol
boat USCGC MANITOU (WHEC 1302) in the most active operational area of the
Coast Guard- Miami Beach, FL. While there, he led the crew on hundreds of
Search and Rescue and Law Enforcement missions, saving 10 lives, aiding
hundreds of undocumented migrants, and interdicting over 5000 pounds of
marijuana and cocaine.
In 2003, CDR Klopson was selected for the Coast
Guard's advanced education program, attending the
NavalPostgraduate
School
in MontereyCalifornia where he was awarded a Master of
Science in Information Systems Management with Distinction. In 2005, CDR
Klopson was assigned as the Coast Guard Academy’s IS Applications
Development Branch Chief where he was responsible for Systems Analysis and
Project Management of the college’s administrative systems. From 2006-2010,
he transitioned to full-time faculty and taught all of the Business
Information System courses at the Coast Guard Academy as an Assistant
Professor in the AACSB-Accredited Management Department.
CDR Klopson reported as Executive Officer of USCGC
MELLON in May 2010.
