In July of 2003, the Coast Guard merged the former Radarman and Telecommunication Specialist (former Radioman) into the Operations Specialist Rating. Their respective shops (Combat and Radio), still exists on Legend Class cutters in the Combat Information Center onboard the ship.
The Combat Information Center (CIC) aboard ship is the proverbial nerve center of the ship. Underway, the watch team of Operations Specialists and Intelligence Specialists led by the Combat Center Information Officer (CICO) for non-combat operations, and the Tactical Action Officer (TAO) during combat operations maintains a constant "common operational picture" of what is happening around the ship’s area of influence, identifying and engaging threats and opportunities to enforce laws and treaties.
