CAPT Kevin A. Jones USCG

Commanding Officer, USCGC Sherman (WHEC-720)

Captain Jones reported to Cutter SHERMAN from Los Angeles, California, where he served as the Coast Guard Liaison to the Motion Picture and Television Industry. He provided creative and technical assistance to numerous production companies including Hawaii 5-O, NCIS, Burn Notice, Breaking Ice, America’s Most Wanted, and the widely popular Coast Guard Alaska and Coast Guard Florida television series. Commissioned though Officer Candidate School in 1991, he has successfully served for 37 years as both a Navy enlisted and as a Coast Guard officer.

Captain Jones has over 20 years of Navy and Coast Guard sea duty, including four commands afloat and ashore. His Coast Guard career is best characterized through operational assignments aboard various cutters as well as staff assignments that support fleet operations. He is a surface operations officer and has extensively patrolled the Pacific waters from the Arctic to the Equator, as well as the Atlantic and Caribbean. He and his crews have executed many of the Coast Guard’s core missions including drug and alien migrant interdiction, fisheries enforcement, search and rescue, and ports and waterways security. Throughout his career, Captain Jones has gained extensive experience in training, performance improvement and change management. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors in Education from Southern Illinois University, and a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership from Regent University. He is a certified Transformational Leadership Coach, and is also a college professor having taught Lean-Six Sigma principles and overseeing quality management graduate projects. In 2013, he earned a Doctorate degree in Business Administration from the National Graduate School. 

Captain Jones is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He wears the permanent Cutterman pin and the Tactical Law Enforcement pin. His personal awards include five Meritorious Service Medals, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, three Navy Achievement Medals, three Navy Good Conduct Medals, and various other team, unit, and individual awards. He and his wife, Natalie, have two grown children.
