FS3 Greg Loya
As a member of the Support Department on board POLAR SEA, Food Service’s Specialist 3rd Class (FS3) Loya plays an essential role in preparing 3 galley meals a day for over 140 crew members when he is duty cook. During AWF09, FS3 Loya was assigned at different points in the deployment as Night Baker. While Night Baker he prepared and served “Mid-Rats,” a delicious snack for those about to go on the graveyard watch (midnight-4AM) and prepared food for the next day’s meals. When birthdays occurred he could be counted on to enthusiastically prepare a special cake and even gave frosting lessons to an unskilled JO while taking heavy rolls in the Bering Sea.
Petty Officer Loya also contributes to crew morale by singing and playing his guitar. He was a crowd favorite at POLAR SEA’s talent show. In Juneau, FS3 Loya volunteered to assist in a community outreach at the local food pantry, Glory Hole. There he put his cooking skills to work, helping feed breakfast to over 50 people. He is an outstanding professional who is due to advance to FS2 in December. Since reporting aboard in the winter of 2008, FS3 Loya has added to POLAR SEA morale whether in the galley or about the boat.
