Member in the Spotlight

September 20, 2009

This week, as the first science mission began, the members at the heart of the operation are Marine Science Technicians (MST). Though only a small division, they play a central role in the success of this deployment.

One noteworthy member of this division, Petty Officer Zach Spence, recently celebrated his 21st birthday. MST3 Spence is known for his cheerful and positive attitude. He is an asset to the division not only because of his strong work ethic and technical skills, but because of his personality and ability to work well with others in every rate. Leading up to and throughout this deployment he has exhibited his professional knowledge through his involvement in designing and operating CGC POLAR SEA’s CTD casting system, onloading science equipment, and through his work as POLAR SEA’s Hazardous Material Coordinator. His competence and knowledge as an investigator during General Emergency training drills propelled him to an assignment on the Damage Control Training Team (DCTT), where he now teaches others their roles and responsibilities while continuing his own professional development. Petty Officer Spence is a valued shipmate and positive role model.
