SN Desiree Strang
Almost every rate and rank is represented onboard POLAR SEA, each playing an integral part in the ship’s mission and everyday work life. Though Deck Department, commonly referred to as Deck Force, is one of the largest groups, it is comprised mainly of junior and non-rated personnel. Highly motivated individuals who demonstrate a strong work ethic and leadership potential become invaluable members of deck force. As soon as she reported aboard, Seaman (SN) Desiree Strang stepped up to the plate with genuine willingness to work. In addition to becoming inport and underway qualified, she took over the management of the ship’s paint locker and was responsible for its initial restructuring. Her organizational skills made the paint locker more efficient and less hazardous for the crew to work in. Over the course of the last shipyard maintenance period, she conducted countless hours of hazmat removal and product usage training for the crew, all the while maintaining the rigorous administrative and log keeping requirements set forth by the shipyard and Coast Guard instructions.
Considered a top performer with a spotless record, she is an excellent role model for her shipmates. She is one of the oldest females on deck force, and has become affectionately referred to as the “Grandma of deck force” because of her cheery, genuine good nature, and willingness to share knowledge and life experiences with the crew. During AWF09 she has been a skilled and energetic member of the teams that prepare for and execute crane and flight operations, science operations, ship restoration projects, and any duties that are required of deck force. SN Strang serves as a strong member of her repair locker fire team as the Plugman and stands watch as a BMOW (Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch), keeping the ship and crew safe at sea. Newly reported personnel are given a perfect example of how maintaining a respectful and motivated attitude along with military bearing and hard work can get you far in the Coast Guard. SN Strang was granted the opportunity to strike the Boatswain’s Mate (BM) rate onboard because of her constant demonstration of effective leadership and management skills. She is well on her way to becoming a great BM and successful Petty Officer in the United States Coast Guard. Her shipmates never have anything but positive things to say about her and her contributions to the ship. Her command is proud to have her as part of the POLAR SEA crew.
