When it comes to operating in a severe environment such as the Arctic, a comprehensive rescue and survival program is critical. Boatswain Mate 3rd Class Obert, a respected leader within the Deck Department, is the perfect Coast Guardsman for the job. Petty Officer Obert is known for his extensive amount of deck specialty knowledge. As POLAR SEA’s Rescue and Survival Petty Officer, he manages, maintains, and inventories all rescue and survival equipment on board. Navy inspectors have praised his program as a model for other units. To help support the science mission, BM3 Obert created boat crew survival equipment bags for each member of the science teams so they can deploy in the small boats and on the ice. BM3 Obert has also directly contributed to AWF09 by his involvement and leadership in removal and replacement of over 8000 ft of deck non-skid. Petty Officer Obert’s positive and enthusiastic attitude is a model for the 30 non-rates he oversees. BM3 stays upbeat at all times, even when bitten by a hungry pelican hook! While underway, he also stands the Junior Officer of the Deck (JOOD) watch. His balance of professionalism and wit helps keep an upbeat atmosphere on the bridge. BM3 Obert is a valued member of the crew who is always up for the next challenge.
