EM1 Jake Rollins
There are many vital components within POLAR SEA’s engineering department. In one small, but crucial shop, Petty Officer Rollins stands out as this week’s “member in the spotlight.” As Control Group’s Electricians Mate 1st Class (EM1), PO Rollins is one of 3 crewmembers onboard responsible for TANO, the computer hub which has over 1500 sensors to monitor the controls and alarms for our 6 main diesel engines, 3 ship’s service diesel generators, 3 turbines, propulsion configuration, and propeller pitch. These systems play an integral role in propelling POLAR SEA through the water.
Additionally, POLAR SEA’s boilers, evaporators, steering consoles, and other engineering systems are all monitored by TANO. Petty Officer Rollins is responsible for calibrating, maintaining, and repairing these systems, quickly responding to any casualty or alarm experienced by engineering watchstanders. EM1 Rollins demonstrated his exceptional technical prowess, recently qualifying as Underway Assistant Engineer of the Watch. He achieved this personal and professional milestone in just 140 days underway, a notable feat by any standards. Regularly assisting other crewmembers with troubleshooting, watch qualifications, and professional development, his "homework" for others has reached a legendary status among those seeking his tutelage. EM1 Jake Rollins is a great shipmate, friend, and a consummate professional.
