SN Bryan Ryder
With one of the largest Deck Departments in the Coast Guard, POLAR SEA requires intensive maintenance and management to ensure the ship is being optimally maintained. As a member of this department, Seaman (SN) Bryan Ryder has distinguished himself from his peers. Prior to the BEST 2010 deployment, SN Ryder assisted with conducting preventative maintenance on the Rescue and Survival gear. As a rescue swimmer, he took the initiative to overhaul the rescue swimmer locker and ensure that the equipment was ready for deployment. Having attended ice rescue school earlier in the year, SN Ryder joined the small group of individuals qualified to conduct ice rescue for the cutter. This vital skill set is essential to POLAR SEA considering the harsh, Arctic environment in which the ship frequently operates.
SN Ryder pursues continual growth as evidenced by his enrollment in both the Speech and English college classes being held on board this trip. These classes are being taken in addition to his normal work load. Furthermore, although he has already qualified as helm and lookout, he is seeking to achieve the next qualification by breaking in as Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch. SN Ryder is dedicated to maintaining a high state of physical fitness as he prepares for rescue swimmer school and the rate of Aviation Survival Technician (AST). SN Ryder is a model for Coast Guard physical fitness. Not only is he dedicated to personal fitness, but he also encourages his shipmates to pursue an active life style.
