FS3 Joshua Ryan
On a ship that serves three rectangular meals a day to 180 crewmembers and scientists, Food Service Specialist Third Class (FS3) Joshua Ryan is one of the driving forces that enables this service. Deployments require logistical preparation in many areas, one of the essential ones being menu planning for the 2-4 month periods spent at sea. For the BEST 2010 Science Deployment, FS3 Ryan purchased, inventoried, and managed $100,000 worth of food items. Not only does FS3 Ryan manage the food inventory, but he ensures that these items are properly stowed so as not to become flying hazards when at sea.
Petty Officer Ryan assists in drafting the weekly menus and issues food items out of his inventory for the menu. Furthermore, FS3 Ryan is often seen on the frontlines, serving the CO and other members of the wardroom. He even survives serving LTJG Perodeau, whose love for exotic desserts keeps FS3 Ryan quite busy. He willingly goes out of his way to accommodate special food requests and energetically makes recommendations for various specialties or “healthy” choices when asked. An active junior petty officer, FS3 Ryan is often involved with morale activities, such as volunteering to help run trivia night. FS3 Ryan can be counted on to help ensure activities run smoothly, even sticking around to clean up after the event is over. As the Food Service division damage control petty officer (DCPO) FS3 Ryan diligently maintains all damage control equipment that is located in Food Service spaces. FS3 Ryan is an outstanding shipmate and crewmember.
