As a member of the Main Propulsion division aboard POLAR SEA, Machinery Technician Third Class (MK3) Daniel Smith has played a key role in maintaining one of the most complicated engineering plants in the Coast Guard. The demands placed upon an icebreaker’s engineering plant require constant monitoring, maintenance, and response to potential emergencies. MK3’s ability to quickly respond was exemplified in his investigation of a high pyrometer (exhaust temperature) on one of the main diesel engines. This identification resulted in replacing a fuel injector which restored propulsion and enabled POLAR SEA to maintain the BEST 2010 Science Deployment schedule.

In addition, MK3 Smith assisted in troubleshooting turbines which led to successful offline runs. Without turbines, POLAR SEA’s icebreaking capabilities would be significantly decreased. Furthermore, when not engaged in responding to engineering casualties, Petty Officer Smith is actively involved in completing preventative maintenance projects and assisting other engineers in their qualifications. MK3 Smith has demonstrated his dedication and value to the Main Propulsion Division and POLAR SEA.
