As a member of the deck department, Boatswain Mate Third Class (BM3) Danielle Gariglio played a crucial role in preparing for the BEST 2010 science deployment as well as in training and qualifying POLAR SEA crew. In the days leading up to the deployment, the crew of POLAR SEA were actively involved in STAN (helicopter standardization training). POLAR SEA was successful at STAN largely due to the behind the scenes work of BM3 Gariglio who put in 30 additional hours of her own time to ensure all flight gear was properly maintained. During the aviation certification process she demonstrated to the fire, fueling, and tie-down teams how the aviation vests work, how to inspect them, and how to manually light them off. These technical skills are vital to every member of the flight crew, especially if a mishap were to occur.

BM3 has quickly become proficient as the new Rescue and Survival Petty officer and used this knowledge to educate others. Upon first departing Seattle, BM3 Gariglio took the lead in instructing our new sailors on how to don the survival suit known as the Gumby Suit. Her directions made donning this cumbersome suit seem almost trouble-free. Even the newest engineering junior officer was able to get in the suit without too many complications! BM3 Gariglio has consistently exhibited her dedication and loyalty to the Coast Guard and POLAR SEA and is an excellent example of a guardian.
