COMMANDING OFFICER OF USCGC MORGENTHAU
A native of Mountain Home, Arkansas, Captain Burg graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1991 where he received a Bachelor of Science degree with High Honors in Civil Engineering. He also earned a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1994.
After graduating from the Coast Guard Academy, Captain Burg served as a Naval Engineer aboard Cutter RESOLUTE in Astoria, Oregon. From 1994 to 1997, Captain Burg was assigned to Civil Engineering Unit Oakland, California, where he oversaw the maintenance and inspection of all navigation and communications towers on the West Coast as well as acting as a geotechnical (foundations) engineer. In early 1996, Captain Burg earned certification as a California Professional Engineer. Next, he served as the Engineer Officer aboard Cutter ACTIVE in Port Angeles, Washington. In summer 2000, he was assigned as Chief of the Planning and Real Property Section at Civil Engineering Unit Cleveland, Ohio. In this assignment, Captain Burg was responsible for oversight of all major shore facility construction planning and Coast Guard realty actions for the Great Lakes region and the East Coast from North Carolina to New Jersey. Captain Burg then reported back to Cutter ACTIVE as Executive Officer in the summer of 2004.
In August 2006, Captain Burg reported to 11th Coast Guard District for assignment as the Assistant Chief of Law Enforcement. In this dynamic role, he leveraged international agreements with partner nations, countered maritime terrorism, and oversaw maritime counter-drug, migrant and living resources law enforcement programs from the Oregon border south to Peru.
Captain Burg assumed command of the Cutter RELIANCE in July of 2008 and served as the Cutter’s Commanding Officer until July of 2010. As part of his tour aboard RELIANCE included an extensive drydock overhaul of the cutter, Captain Burg assumed command of Cutter VIGOROUS for a 60 day fishery patrol.
In August of 2010, Captain Burg joined the Pacific Area staff as the Chief of Maritime Patrol Forces Section providing oversight and administrative assistance for the entire Pacific Fleet. During this tour, Captain Burg temporarily assumed command of Cutter DAUNTLESS for an ongoing migrant patrol.
Captain Burg's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Coast Guard Commendation Medal (4 awards), the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation. He is a permanent Cutterman with over 9 years of sea service.
