MIDGETT Executive Officer, CDR Daniel K. Pickles

Commander Daniel Pickles graduated with high honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1994 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Upon graduation, his first tour of duty was onboard USCGC BUTTONWOOD in San Francisco, CA as a Deck Watch Officer and Navigator. In 1996, he was assigned to the Command and Control Engineering Center as part of the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) project. In 1998, he was selected for the CG Graduate Program and attended the University of Rhode Island where he earned a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Upon completing his MS degree in 1999, he reported to the Navigation Center in Alexandria, VA and worked as the Differential GPS Management Branch Chief overseeing the implementation, development and policy of the Coast Guard’s DGPS network. In 2001 CDR Pickles returned to sea, completing a 2-year tour as the Operations Officer aboard USCGC ALERT, a 210ft Medium Endurance Cutter, homeported in Astoria, OR. From ALERT he transferred to Sandy Hook, NJ where he assumed command of USCGC BAINBRIDGE ISLAND in August 2003.

In July 2005, CDR Pickles returned to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and served as an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Section until May 2009.

Commander Pickles’ military awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Coast Guard Achievement Medal (2 awards), the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation ribbon bar and several other unit and service awards.
