Matthew A. Michaelis

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Michaelis hails from Babson Park, FL and graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in May 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Government.

His first assignment was as Deck Watch Officer on USCGC JARVIS, homeported in Honolulu, HI, where he served as Gunnery Officer and Combat Information Systems Officer.

In May 2002, he was assigned as Executive Officer of USCGC AQUIDNECK, homeported in Atlantic Beach, NC. In February 2003, USCGC AQUIDNECK was forward deployed to the Persian Gulf, where Lieutenant Commander Michaelis served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom until July 2004.

In September 2004, Lieutenant Commander Michaelis reported to Seattle, WA as a Command Duty Officer at Coast Guard District Thirteen Command Center. In this position, he was awarded RCC/SAR Controller of the Year in 2006. In June 2007, Lieutenant Commander Michaelis assumed command of USCGC GALVESTON ISLAND, where he conducted patrols off the Hawaiian Islands and in the South Pacific.

While not at sea, Lieutenant Commander Michaelis is a program performance, planning and budgeting professional. He holds Master Degrees in Public Administration and International Relations from Syracuse University, a Graduate Certificate in Counterterrorism Studies from the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel, and is a certified government financial manager. His most recent assignment was to Coast Guard Headquarters Office of Performance Management and Assessment. Additionally, he served adjunct duty at the White House.

Lieutenant Commander Michaelis is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, three Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Commandant's Letter of Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, and other unit and service awards.
