Joseph J. Sundland
CDR Sundland, a native of Fox Lake, Illinois, graduated from Grant Community High School in June 1987 and enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves. CDR Sundland completed Coast Guard basic training in August of 1987 from Cape May, New Jersey. While assigned to the Coast Guard Small Boat Station in Kenosha, Wisconsin, he attended the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. After two years of reserve duty and college, CDR Sundland entered the Naval Academy Preparatory School in June 1989, and was then given an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in June 1990. CDR Sundland received his commission in the United States Coast Guard upon his graduation from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in May 1994 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. CDR Sundland received his Masters of Science degree in Information Technology Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA in June 2008.
CDR Sundland is currently serving as the Executive Officer aboard the USCGC BERTHOLF (WMSL 750) in Alameda, CA. His previous Sea Tours include: USCGC MELLON (WHEC 717) in Seattle, Washington as a Deck Watch Officer, Assistant Navigator, and Training Officer from 1994 - 1996; USCGC SENECA (WMEC 906) in Boston, Massachusetts as the Operations Officer, Navigator, and Law Enforcement Officer from 1999 - 2001; USCGC DEPENDABLE (WMEC 626) in Cape May, New Jersey as the Executive Officer from 2004 - 2006.
His awards include: Two Meritorious Service Medals, Four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, Two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation, and Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal.
CDR Sundland is married to the former Ms. Melinda Sundberg from Ingleside, Illinois and they have a 4 old daughter, Maryn. CDR Sundland has one son, Kyle (11 yrs old) who lives with his mother in New Haven, Connecticut.
