Merchant Mariner Credential

Merchant Mariner Credential booklet cover image

The National Maritime Center has been going through several new changes in regards to issuing Merchant Mariner's Credentials (MMC).  NMC is now producing a new credential which looks similar to a United States Passport.  All US Mariners will be issued this credential as a replacement of their past MMD.  You will have several endorsements depending on your Seatime and tonnage experience.

The biggest change is - ALL US Mariners MUST have or be in the process of applying for a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). If you have obtained your TWIC you may mail in your application to your local REC.

Once you have obtained your TWIC then you may apply for a Merchant Mariner Credential at a local Regional Exam Center. When applying to a REC please make sure you have completed your application to avoid any delays. Your application must be submitted (mailed) to a REC and not to the National Maritime Center.

Merchant Mariner's Endorsements

All endorsements and Raise of Grade are based on Federal Codes.  Please review our Federal Regulation site to help you with the requirements for each credential.

Payment

We highly recommended that you use Pay.Gov - Credit Card Payment Form in order to pay for your Original credential. It is fast, safe, and reliable method of payment. See Title 46 CFR 10.110 for additional user fees.

Are you prepared?
September is National Preparedness Month.
