MWR Internship Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut

DESCRIPTION:  US Coast Guard Academy.  Morale, Well-Being, and Recreation (MWR) facilities/activities on the installation include:  Child Development Center, Food and Beverage Operations, Catering, Bowling Center, Equipment Checkout Facility, and Ticket Resale Office.  Interns can expect to gain operational and programming experience in a number of these facilities with specialized focus provided to Early Childhood Development and Culinary majors.  Click here to visit their web site for more information.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  US Coast Guard Academy seeks interns with a desire to gain experience in Child Development Center Early Childhood Education and Culinary Arts.  Must be a student in good standing pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Early Childhood Education, Culinary Arts, or other related field and identified as such by an institution of higher learning having an affiliation agreement with the Coast Guard.


Child Development Center:  Ms. Patricia McIlveen has over 20 years of direct Military Early Childhood Program management experience.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education and graduate level coursework in program management and leadership.  As the Coast Guard Academy Child Development Center Director, she has guided the Center through the NAEYC Accreditation process since 1997.  Patricia received numerous awards for her service, most notably, the Department of Transportation Award of Excellence.  She has served as an active Board Member on the Connecticut Association for the Education of Young Children since 2000, holding positions of President, Vice President, and Accreditation Chairperson.  She also serves as Coast Guard liaison on several local community councils and boards for young children.  Intern opportunities exist to work in this NAEYC accredited early childhood program with 105 children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age.  The program highlights 8 classrooms separated into three age groups.  The staff of 32 teachers and assistants work together to provide developmentally appropriate opportunities and experiences which will help to develop the whole child.  The program utilizes up to date technology of a web based curriculum by which staff can input child observations to chart development and share progress with parents. 

Culinary Arts Mr. Jeffrey McOmber has over 20 years of direct MWR management experience.  He received his secondary education training from Johnson & Wales University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Culinary Arts.  As the Executive Chef for the Coast Guard Academy Officers' Club, he typically caters over 250 events annually, including at least 20 weddings.  He has received numerous awards for his service.  Most notably he was selected as a member for the International Military Community Executives Association (IMCEA) Military All Star Chefs team which competed in the Iron Chef "Mystery Box Challenge" at Catersource 2007.  He also served as representative on the annual Joint Service Catering Panel and was subsequently awarded the Guiding Principles Award.  Intern opportunities exist to work flexible schedules in this Club and catering facility gaining a broad scope of experience in Culinary Arts.

HOUSING:  Housing may be available on the installation depending on availability and will be finalized prior to student placement.  This internship is best suited for students within commuting distance. 

MEALS:  Interns will be provided with a meal on work days.  Meal times will be coordinated with the supervisor once accepted at this location.

PAY:  No pay, this is a volunteer internship.

TRAVEL:  Travel to and from the internship is the responsibility of the student.  Contact information will be provided to you once selected for the internship.

AVAILABILITY:   Multiple intern positions are open for 8 to 30 weeks in duration (depending on school requirements), on a year-round basis.  Best time for internship is May-September when more events occur.  (Note:  There is no requirement to join the Coast Guard, these are civilian positions).
