DESCRIPTION: Joint Base Cape Cod, operated by the Mass Air National Guard, Army National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard is located on the upper western portion of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It includes parts of the towns of Mashpee, Bourne and Sandwich and abuts the town of Falmouth. Once an active U.S. Air Force base, the installation covers nearly 21,000 acres - approximately 30 square miles. Interns may expect to gain operational and programming experience in a number of these MWR facilities include a pool, bowling center, activity center, fitness center, gym, sports fields, golf course, ticket sales, lodging, and equipment rental facility. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Seeking self-starting and independent students with desire to gain experience in programming and operation in any/all of the above facilities,assist in planning and implementing adult sport leagues; flag football, indoor volleyball, indoor basketball, softball and bowling, recreation facility operations and programs, outdoor pool operation and programming, bowling center operation and programming, tourism, tickets, and hospitality, nature trail and physical fitness trail development and operation, activity and event preparation, budgeting, staffing, and program registration. Student will have the opportunity to plan and implement at least one major special event (holiday event, theme party, sport event). Process includes marketing, promotion, public relations, budgeting, scheduling, programming, safety management, post event evaluation and press release. Must be a student in good standing pursuing a degree in recreation, sports, hospitality, or other MWR-related field and identified as such by an institution of higher learning having an affiliation agreement with the Coast Guard.
SUPERVISOR/MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS: Ms. Candace LeBlanc held a variety of recreation positions prior to her military career. She retired after 23 years with the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant. She earned her associates degree in Recreation Leadership from Greenfield Community College, and her Bachelors in Leisure Studies from the University of Massachusetts. Under the direct supervision of the MWR Team, the student intern assumes both administrative and programming roles which involves performing duties and responsibilities commonly assigned to entry-level MWR positions. The intern will work in a variety of facilities, situations, and programs, which involve the intricacies of MWR and Otis ANG Base. By conclusion of the internship, the student should be qualified and prepared to take on an entry-level position within a MWR organization.
HOUSING:Housing will be provided, two students per house, in a non-smoking facility. Pets are not allowed. Students will coordinate housing with the Cape Cod MWR staff once accepted at that location.
MEALS:Interns will be issued a meal pass for the galley that serves 3 meals per day. Interns will coordinate meal times with the Cape Cod MWR staff once accepted at that location.
PAY:No pay, this is a volunteer internship.
TRAVEL:Travel to and from the internship is the responsibility of the student. Due to the large size of this installation, it is very strongly recommended that an intern have their own vehicle. Local contact information will be provided once selected for the internship.
AVAILABILITY:Two intern positions are open for 12 to 16 weeks in duration (depending on school requirements), on a year-round basis. (Note: There is no requirement to join the Coast Guard, these are civilian positions).
