DESCRIPTION: The MWR Program at Air Station Borinquen strives to provide Coast Guard members, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense civilians stationed there a means of recreational, sporting, and morale enhancing activities. These activities include functions such as Holiday parties, celebrations, sport day activities, aerobics and dance classes, arts and crafts activates, sports challenges, outdoor adventure, and social gatherings. Facilities within the MWR Program include Guest Housing, Community Center, Swimming Pool, Library, Movie Theater, Equipment Rental, Sports and Fitness, Arts and Crafts Center, and the Boys and Girls Club of America. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Air Station Borinquen seeks interns with emphasis in abilities to gain experience in conducting intramural sports competitions, outdoor recreation programs, special events, youth activities, aquatics, and in the areas of restaurant and lodging for Hospitality Management majors. Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred, but not a requirement. Opportunities exist to work in a great fast-paced learning environment with flexible hours and diverse experiences in all of the facilities and activities describe above. Opportunities range from pool operations, to intramural sport programs, gym operations, and special annual events such as the Coast Guard Day picnic and Fourth of July celebrations. Must be a student in good standing pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in Recreation or other MWR-related field and identified as such by an institution of higher learning having an affiliation agreement with the Coast Guard.
SUPERVISOR QUALIFICATIONS: Mr. Blair Markham has over 30 years of affiliation with the Coast Guard. Having served thirteen years at Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, he understands and has experienced the unique needs of their community. From the young single person, to those married with dependents, he is fully aware of and committed to supporting and resolving quality of life issues for members assigned to Borinquen.
HOUSING: Housing will be provided, two students per house, in a non-smoking facility. Pets are not allowed.
MEALS: A fixed reimbursement of meals will be provided.
PAY: No pay, this is a volunteer internship.
TRAVEL: Travel to and from the internship is the responsibility of the student. Arrangements may be made for pick up at the airport by contacting the Air Station Borinquen MWR Director prior to arrival. Contact information will be provided to you once selected for the internship.
AVAILABILITY: Intern positions may be open for 12 to 16 weeks in duration (depending on school requirements) on a year-round basis. Best time for internship is June-September when more events occur. (Note: There is no requirement to join the Coast Guard, these are civilian positions).
TO APPLY: Application deadline is 1 March for summer semester internships, and at least 45 days in advance for other semesters. Planning ahead is most important especially if we need to establish an affiliation agreement with your university.
