Credit Reports include personal information, employment information, payment history, a list of creditors, any bankruptcies or lawsuits, and any inquiries about your credit history. Periodically, you should get a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies-- Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian. Ideally, you will request a copy annually to make sure your report is accurate. At a minimum, you should request a copy before you make any large purchase, apply for a loan, or change jobs. A reasonable fee may be charged by the credit reporting agency to provide you a copy of your credit report. However, if you are a resident of certain states- CO, GA, MD, MA, NJ, and VT you may be able to receive a copy once a year at no charge. Residents of ME may be charged a maximum of $3 for a copy of their credit report and residents of CT may be charged a maximum of $7 for a copy of their credit report. Also, if you were denied credit within the past 60 days by a business, bank, or other organization you are entitled to a free copy of a credit report from the credit reporting agency that organization used to evaluate your credit. The Credit Reporting Agencies may now let you order a copy of your credit report over the phone or the Internet. If a written letter is required, a form letter is available by clicking on ORDER FORM FOR CREDIT REPORT for you to use.
